The night was long and hot. Too hot to even sleep. In the morning, a bit tired, you need to drag yourself from bed. The sun is still not very high, but the heat is increasing already. You are thirsty. Dreaming of an invigorating shower.

Then slowly you go the shower, barefoot on the tiles that give you a moment of much welcomed freshness. You take a glass and turn the cold water faucet to fill it up. But nothing. Not even a drop of water. Just a very dry mouth. The shower is dried up as well. No water. No more water…

You would have had to get up well before the sun to go to the water pump at the other end of town. The well in your neighborhood broke down for too long ago. And then you would have waited a long time in line, until the sun was already high in the heavy sky. Eventually you would have filled your yellow plastic 25 liter canister and you would head back home with this heavy load on your head. Back at home, before swallowing your bowl of millet porridge that you would have quickly cooked it on an open fire, you would have taken a little water in a tin can to wash your face. Then you would have “washed” your teeth vigorously rubbing them with a piece of neem wood. Finally, before leaving for the field, or for school, or to the market, you would have gone to hide behind a bush in a field right next to you home, and like everyone else, you would have “taken care of business”.

We have a very hard time to realize the privilege we have to have water. And do not think that it’s easier for our friends Bouassa to go through what is described above because they have been doing it like that for a long time. They too have aspirations. Sometimes much simpler than ours in the West or elsewhere… Simple things like a little fresh water that would flow from a faucet.

You see, giving to this water drilling project in an African village is an investment into the lives of people and it also gives meaning to a water faucet in a bathroom! So do not give up with Bouassa and with the many other African villages!

We still believe…
