Here is an overview of what is involved:
1. Community Engagement
This is vital to the success of the project; the community in Bouassa is very involved at every step of the process. We have met with different local leaders and the mayor (equivalent) informing them of our intents and they support us and are ready to work with is!!
2. Community Education
Clean, safe water can be a new concept in a village. Understanding concepts like hand-washing and proper use of latrines is key to maximizing the benefits of a new well.
3. Installing the Project
From filing for permits to installing a well pump or other hardware, a lot goes into the construction phase of a water project like a well. We will walk you through the different steps as we go through the process. Did you know that it might take more than one borehole to find good clean water? In some places it takes between 4-7 holes!
4. Education Follow-up and Handing Over
The exciting moment when water flows and the community in Bouassa celebrates their new water source is just the beginning! Have you seen our web-page? On the top right side of the site, it says that we are only a little more than half way to our goal? What’s left you ask? Well, in order for this project to truly be sustainable long term it needs income producing elements. The Bouassa project is, at the core, a well water project but with the other aspects (sanitation, vegetable gardens and chicken breeding) will make the water well self-sufficient and in other words: sustainable. It will also create a few jobs that will change the community!
5. Monitoring and Evaluation
Did it work? Is it still working? Was anyone really helped? If we don’t ask, we’ll never know. Besides that fact that we have dear friends living in Bouassa, after the well has been dug, we will be back to check on everything, making sure what was accomplished was done well and is serving the needs of the village!
Even though we now have enough to drill the well… DON’T STOP NOW… We aren’t there yet!
