Here we are again, faced with an important decision… The amount of drinking water that well produces, 1600 gallons (6m3) per hour, is quite considerable. And that’s wonderful!

However, as we explained in the previous article, we feel it is necessary to increase our financial goal in order to build a water tower. We’ve started to get bids and info and let me tell you it’s not cheap! Given the amount of water available it would require a 4000 gallon (15m3) water tower. This would not only keep the hand pump operating but would also allow us to add 10 valves to a valve chest for additional water filling (water chest). A huge advantage of this would be to minimize the long waiting lines, not to mention the greater ease of equipment management.

So these last weeks we’ve been working on the second phase of funding, which will include the water tower, and as planned, the fence around the garden, meals and other assistance for children as well as the latrine / shower units.

Currently, an “association of water users” was set up in Bouassa and this association will manage the hand pump. They set the sales price of the water at 5 FCFA (currency of West Africa) for 20 liters of water pumped, which is about 0.0076 cents. Already about 1000 FCFA (1.52 €) is collected daily. This money which is managed by the association (under the supervision of the pastor of the Protestant parish in Bouassa), will be used to fund equipment maintenance and help a woman who is in charge of the keeping the area clean and collecting payments. We are really happy with the turn of events; the village is very involved as well as the local governments. All of this allows us to take the project further with some peace of mind!

At the end of next week, one of us will travel to Burkina Faso to follow up on the different options in front of us.

We are counting on you to continue to SPREAD THE WORD about Bouassa! If you know if any foundations/ trusts/ groups/ churches / politicians / businesses / friends / family/ acquaintances/ people you’ve just met which might finance the next phase in Bouassa, please get us in touch with them! 🙂
