A Holistic Approach

Last week we reminded you of the different aspects of Bouassa project. As we have already mentioned, our project meets the guidelines of the city’s “Community Development Plan” for Water and Sanitation created by the Government of Burkina Faso, which is also a signatory for these vital aspects within the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals are a United Nations project that furthers its objective to reduce the number of people without access to drinking water, by 50%.

This is our fight as well. In fact, it is an intricate part of a comprehensive or holistic approach known as the Territorial Approach. In other words, when you come to a new area (village, district, region …) we try to understand the priority issues of that territory and give the people of the area the possibility of becoming an actor in its development to address these issues. Our goal as an NGO is to model this approach that can be developed in other areas, outside the village of Bouassa in Burkina Faso, where we have already been requested to intervene.

It seems to us that Creating Sustainable Economic Cycles is one of the most viable solutions for development of Africa. These very dynamics have already been integrated into the “Water User Committee” that we put in place. We couldn’t just focus on a water-well but on a more Holistic Approach. And we are very encouraged to see that in the neighborhood, access to water and the goals of district development are very obvious! Take for example the small Protestant parish in Bouassa that has given itself an ambitious goal of eradicating unemployment in the next three years. This goal is already making considerable headway with the hand pump and soon the water tower!

Bouassa’s goals:

  1. Promote access to water for the local population
  2. Help families and children in distress
  3. Develop economic activities in line with access to water
  4. Participate actively in the city’s “Community Development Plan”
  5. Raise awareness in economic management of water and sanitation
  6. Accompany children for better personal hygiene, reducing sickness
